Speaking
to a Jehovah’s Witness

Jehovah’s
Witnesses have one main objective: To get you to take their literature so that
they can come back to discuss it with you. They come with a prepared introduction, which is normally about the
current state of the world, and want to know your religious background so they
can give you the most appropriate literature.
They don’t
want you to ask any questions, because they seldom have the answers. They say that if you believe their literature
to be false you should not accept it from them.
However, if you accept their literature you will be frustrated by the
lies & deception in it. They will
also ask a donation for the printing cost, only if you can, of cause.
You might be
surprised that they even quote respected theologians in their literature. While this is true they often misquote them
or only quote them in part to give the impression they approved of their
heresies. Also note, if you offer them
any literature from your side, they will refuse to take it from you.
Their
literature are filled with deceptions and lies. I generally do not recommend
you take it. However, if you do take it,
it will give you an opportunity for a future conversation; they will return to
ask for a response to what you have read.
If you do decide to take it, do not spend to much time on it, just scan
it over. Focus on one false
doctrine. Then if they return say
something like: “Thank you, I have read it, but I disagree with this article”
(mention it specifically). Ask them if
they can please bring you photocopies of the original sources quoted in
it. They may be hesitant, but tell them if the Watchtower Society is
truly concerned about people salvation,
they should be happy to supply the required documentation. However, ‘The Watchtower Society is never
cooperative in offering these ‘proofs’ and this will frustrate him and might
leave him with questions. This then
becomes an opportunity to share the truth.
Let us look
at what the ‘Jehovah’s Witnesses’ believes:
1.
The
error of their beliefs
The
Watchtower Society have their own erroneous translation of the Bible called
‘The New World Translation’. It is
purposefully mistranslated and if ever they do quote verses it will never be in
context, they only quote a single verse to prove their point. They also believe that all other churches are
part of ‘the apostate Christendom’ and calls us ‘the Great Whore of Babylon’.
But let us
get into some more details of their false beliefs, and then to the truth of
God’s Word:
a.
Trinity
What
they believe:
They
reject the doctrine of the Trinity as unbiblical and pagan, and says that God
is one! They accuse us of believing in
three gods.
What
the Bible teaches:
The
Bible does say that there’s only one God (Isa. 44:6; Isa. 45:18; Isa. 46:9;
Joh. 5:44; 1 Cor. 8:4 and Jam. 2:19 and we don’t deny that God is one. However the Bible also shows that there are
three persons called God. (a) The Father
(1 Pet. 1:2); (b) Jesus (Joh. 20:28; Heb. 1:8); (c) and the Holy Spirit (Acts
5:2, 4). Furthermore all 3 posses divine
attributes, for instance they are all: (a) Omnipresent (Psa. 139:7; Jer.
23:23-24; Matt. 28:20); (b) Omniscient (Psa. 147:5; Joh. 16:30; 1 Cor 2:10-11);
(c) Omnipotent (Jer. 32:17; Joh. 2:1-11; Rom. 15:19); (d) Eternal (Psa. 90:2;
Heb. 9:14; Rev 15:19). All three are also involved in divine works, like
creation for instance: (a) The Father (Gen. 1:1; Psa. 102:25); the Son (Joh.
1:3; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2); the Holy Spirit (Gen. 1:2; Job 33:4; Psa. 104:30). There are also passages that place them
together indicating they are a Triune God, for instance in Matt. 28:19 and 2
Cor. 13:14.
b.
God,
the Father
What
they believe:
They
do believe that there is only one God who they believe is a Spiritual being,
although He has a body, but it is a non-human body. They further believe He has only one name:
‘Jehovah’. Interestingly Jehovah is not
even a real name, or even a real word.
The Jews regarded God’s name ‘Yahweh’ (YHWH) as so holy that whenever
they read Scripture and came to this name they will say ‘Adonai’ which means
‘Lord’ instead. In the medieval times
the Jews began adding the vowels of ‘Adonai’ to the consonants of ‘Yahweh’. This was called the Tetragram. Jehovah is the English for the consonants of
Yahweh with the vowels of Adonai.
Therefore it is not even a real word, nor is it a name given to God in
the Bible.
What
the Bible teaches:
In
the Bible God has many names, not just one.
For example, He is called Elohim ‘God’ in Gen. 1:1; He is called El
Shadday ‘God Almighty’ in Gen. 17:1; He is also called Adonay ‘Lord’
in Psa. 8:1 and called yhwh tseba’ot ‘Lord of hosts’ in 1 Sam. 1:3, just
to name a few. Therefore their
insistence that God has only one name is wrong.
c.
Jesus
Christ
- His person
What they believe:
The
believe that Jehovah created Jesus first, before all the other creatures and
that he is the archangel Michael. They
to accept that he is ‘a god’ but a far lesser God that Jehovah.
What
the Bible teaches:
The
Bible is very clear that Jesus is eternally God (Joh 1:1; Joh 8:58; Exod. 3:14). It also teaches that he has the exact same
nature as the Father (Joh. 5:18; Joh. 10:30; Heb. 1:3). In fact if you compare Old Testament
references of Yahweh and New Testament references of Jesus it shows that Jesus
is Yahweh. Compare: Isa. 43:11 with Tit.
2:13, Compare: Isa. 44:24 with Col. 1:16 and Compare: Isa. 6:1-5 with Joh.
12:41. Furthermore, Jesus cannot be a mere angel,
since He created the angels (Col. 1:16, Joh. 1:3 & Heb. 1:2, 10) and the
angels worships Him (Heb. 1:6). Their
false teaching does not end with who Jesus is, but also include the events of
his life:
- His incarnation
What
they believe:
While
they believe He was born on earth, they believe He was mere human, not God. Although they say that Jesus lived a perfect
life, He only died for the sins of Adam, not all who believe in Him. They also believe that Jesus was burned at
the stake and not that He was crucified.
What
the Bible teaches:
But
the Bible is clear that in the man Jesus…“the whole fullness of deity dwells
bodily” (Col 2:9 & see Phil 2:6-7).
In Colossians 2:9 the Greek word for ‘fullness’ means ‘sum total’ and
the word for ‘deity’ refers to the nature, being and attributes of God. In other words. It states that Jesus is the sum total of all
the nature, being and attributes of God in bodily form. He is indeed ‘Immanuel, God with us’ (Matt.
1:23; Isa. 7:14; Joh. 1:1, 14, 18; Joh. 10:30; Joh. 14:9-10).
- His resurrection
What
they believe:
Regarding
Jesus resurrection they believe he was only resurrected spiritually not bodily
and that His body somehow disappeared, never to be seen again.
What
the Bible teaches:
The
Bible is very clear that Jesus was resurrected with a flesh-and-bone body. We
have eye witness accounts in Luk. 24:39 & Joh. 2:19-21 of this. Also, on several occasions Jesus ate food (Luk.
24:30, Luk. 24:42-43 & Joh. 21:12-13) and was touched by some of His
followers (Matt. 28:9 & Joh. 20:17).
- His second coming
What
they believe:
Regarding
his second coming they believe that He has already returned in 1914. This was a spiritual and invisible appearance
that only their leaders was aware of. They do not believe that He will return
again, but that He will remain in heaven and reign from there.
What
the Bible teaches:
Contrary
to this the Bible teaches that Jesus’ return is still in the future and has not
occurred yet.
His
second coming will be visible and physical (Acts 1:9-11 and Tit. 2:13), it will
be a cosmic event (Matt. 24:29-30) so that every eye will see Him(Rev. 1:7).
The
Biblical teaching about Jesus is clear. He
is the eternal God, equal to the Father; He created everything that exist; He
was born the incarnate Son of God; He was sinless and died for all believers; His
resurrection was in a physical body which was seen by many, even touched by
some; His return, for which we are still waiting, will be physical & cosmic,
every eye will see Him. This is clearly
taught in the Bible and to deny it is to deny the Christian faith.
d.
Holy
Spirit
What
they believe:
Jehovah’s
Witnesses do not believe that the Holy Spirit is a distinct person, but rather
that he is the ‘impersonal force’ of Jehovah.
What
the Bible teaches:
The
Bible show that the Holy Spirit has all three the primary attributes that makes
a person distinct. He has a mind (Rom.
8:27); He has emotions (Eph. 4:30) and He has a will (1 Cor. 12:11). Furthermore the Bible uses personal pronouns
when speaking of Him (i.e. Acts 13:2).
The Spirit is also able to do things that only a person is capable of
doing, like teaching (Joh. 14:26); testifying (Joh. 15:26); commissioning (Acts
13:4); issuing commands (Acts 8:29); and interceding (Rom. 8:6). It is clear from the Bible that the Holy
Spirit is a separate person and not merely an impersonal force of God. He is the third persons of the Trinity (Matt
28:19).
e.
Salvation
& eternity
- Salvation
What they
believe:
While Jehovah’s Witnesses do say that
you must believe in Jesus, faith in Jesus is not sufficient to save you. You must also be a member of their
organisation and must obey all their regulations and rules if you want to
survive Armageddon. But even then you
still cannot have assurance, nor can you ever know if you have done
enough.
What the
Bible teaches:
The works based salvation of the
Jehovah’s Witnesses completely nullifies the gospel of faith alone in Jesus
Christ alone (Gal 2:16-21 & Col 2:20-23).
The Bible teaches that salvation is wholly based on the unmerited favour
of God. While the Bible does not deny
the importance of good works, good works is the fruit of true salvation, it is
not the basis of our salvation (Eph. 2:8-10 & Tit. 3:4-8 ).
- Eternity
What
they believe:
Even
if a Jehovah’s Witness does survive Armageddon, they still have little hope of
reaching heaven. Only 144 000 of
the ‘Anointed Class’ will go to heaven and reign with Jesus. The rest will be part of the ‘other sheep’
who will live on ‘paradise earth’ for ever.
They will only reach either of these eternities if they continue to
faithfully obey their teaching until the end.
What
the Bible teaches:
The
Bible teaches that heaven is the destiny of all who believe in Jesus Christ (Joh.
14:1-3; Joh. 17:24; 2Cor 5:1; Phil 3:20; Col. 1:5; 1 Thess. 4:17; Heb. 3:1). All those who go to heaven are the same
people who will dwell on the new earth (2Pet. 3:13; Rev. 21:1-4) since heaven
and earth will be united.
- The soul
What they believe:
They do not believe that the soul is
eternal, but that it dies the moment that you die. They regard it as your ‘life-source’ which
simply leave your body and cease to exist.
What
the Bible teaches
The
Bible sees the soul as a multifaced part of every human being. It is the immaterial human self which remains
conscious after death (Gen. 35:18; Rev. 6:9-10). The soul of unbelievers will go on to
experience eternal conscious woes after death (Matt. 13:42; Matt. 25:41,46; Luk.
16:22-24; Rev. 14:11). The soul of
believers in Christ will continue to experience eternal bliss in heaven (1 Cor.
2:9; 2 Cor. 5:6-8; Phil. 1:21-23; Rev. 7:17; Rev. 21:4)
- Hell
What they believe:
They deny that hell is an eternal
place of suffering, but say that it is merely the common grave of humankind and
that the wicked is annihilated
What
the Bible teaches:
The
Bible describes hell as a place of eternal real conscious suffering which is
the eternal home of all who reject Jesus Christ (Matt. 5:22; Matt. 25:41, 46;
Jude. 1:7; Rev. 14:11; Rev. 20:10, 14).
2. The opportunity to witness
The most important thing to remember
when witnessing to anyone is that, as believers, we must always show genuine
love, even to those who believer heresy.
We are encourages by Ephesians 4:15 to always speak the truth in
love. While it may seem very
intimidating to speak to Jehovah’s Witnesses, we must always remember that we
have the truth and they do not. In any
case, generally the person that knocks on your door is not very well educated
in what they believe and normally only recite what they have been told. This gives us the opportunity to speak to
them and sow doubts about the teachings of the Watchtower Society. While it may take a very long time to refute
everything they believe and they will not accept it if you attach every
doctrine of theirs, it is helpful to focus on a single doctrine and seek to sow
doubt about their beliefs and thereby open the door to share the gospel. I have two suggestions of doctrines which you
can question to sow doubt that also open the door for sharing the gospel:
a. Is Jesus the Archangel Michael?
Ask them: ‘So, Is Jesus really an
angel?’ to this they will respond by
saying ‘yes’. Then ask them to show you
form ‘the Scriptures’ (how they refer to their erroneous version of the Bible),
where it says that Jesus is Michael. The
Jehovah’s Witnesses base this belief on a publication of ‘The Watchtower,
February 15, 1979, p. 31’. In their
version of the Bible, called ‘the New World Translation’, there is 5 references
to Michael. (i) He is called ‘one of the
foremost princes’ in Daniel 10:13. (ii) He is called ‘the prince of [Daniel’s]
people’ in Daniel 10:21. (ii) He is also
called ‘the great prince who stand on behalf of the sons of [Daniel’s] people’
in Daniel 12:1 (iv) He is called ‘the archangel’ who ‘had a difference with the
devil and disputed over Moses’ body’ but ‘ did not dare to bring judgement
against him in abusive terms’ in Jude 1:9. (v) Finally he was also a
participant in the heavenly conflict when Michael and his angels battled with
the dragon in Revelation 12:7.
After they have given you all these
references, of some of them, ask them to show you where any of these verses
says that Michal is Jesus? Their belief
that Jesus is the archangel Michael is in no way clear from Scriptures (not
even theirs). This belief is based
rather on a very complicated and unbiblical argument of ‘the Watchtower’ and is
in no way Biblical.
After this show them from the Bible,
or perhaps best, ask them to page there in their own New World Translation, and
show them what the Bible does say about Jesus in relation to this. Show them that rather than being ‘one of the
foremost princes’, as they claim, Jesus Christ is “Lord of lords and king of
kings” according to Revelation 17:14.
Also according to Ephesians 1:21, Jesus Christ is “far above every
government and authority and power and lordship and every name named, not only
in this system of things, but also in that to come”. Also show them that rather than like the
archangel Michael who in Jude 1:9 “did not even dare to condemn the Devil
with insulting words, but said ‘The Lord rebuke you!’”, Jesus showed his
authority over the devil and commanded him “Go away, Satan!” in Matthew
4:10. Therefore Jesus was not afraid to
condemn the Devil or said “The Lord rebuke you!”, bit Jesus rebuked the devil
himself in His own name.
They may also refer you to 1
Thessalonians 4:16 which says “The Lord himself will descend from heaven
with a commanding call, with an archangel voice and with God’s trumpet…” They believe that ‘with an archangel voice’
refers to Jesus. But all that it says
and means is that the archangel will herald, like a trumpet, that the Lord is
coming. It does not say that Jesus is
the archangel.
What we must realise is that none of
these verses, or any other verses in Scriptures (our or theirs) says that Jesus
is the archangel Michael or visa versa.
There is therefore no proof text for this that they can offer you.
After this, draw their attention to
Hebrews 1. If you can, read the whole
chapter to them, but at least draw their attention to Hebrews 1:5-6. In our Bibles it reads “Let all God’s
angels worship him”. In their
version of the Bible, since 1970 when it was changed, it reads “and let
God’s angels do obeisance to him”.
Obeisance means ‘bow down’. But
even obeisance shows that the angels submitted to him. After this show them angels has consistently
refused to be worshipped through the Scriptures (i.e. Rev. 22:8-9).
While focussing on this single error
in their doctrine you have not refuted all their teaching, or even one of their
main false teachings. You have however
sowed doubt in their minds about the ‘truth’ they believe and how Scriptural it
really is. This also lays a good
foundation to present the true gospel of Jesus Christ, the Eternal Son of God
who is not just above all angels, but who is the only hope of all men.
b. Was Jesus created or the Creator?
While Jehovah’s Witnesses might admit
that Jesus was the creator, they will say that Jehovah created him first and
then created everything else through him.
Turn their attention to what their Bible says in John 1:1 “In the
beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was a god”
is what their translation reads. They believe that Jesus was the first
creation of Jehovah, and a far lesser god (demi-god) than He is. Then turn their attention to two verses
later, John 1:3, but only read the first part of the verse “All things were
made through him”. If ‘the Word’ in
verse 1 is Jesus, then “all things were made through him”. Ask them who could “all things” be created by
him is he himself is created. Ask them
how could he be a creature since he could not make himself, yet made ‘all
things’? They may respond by saying
something like ‘Yes, but since he is the creator of all things, he is excluded
from ‘all things’ that he created, but that doesn’t mean that he was not
created before. This would be a
consistent argument based on what they believe, namely that Jehovah created
Jesus, as the creator of all things, before he created everything else through
him.
Now turn their attention to the second
part of the verse “and without him was not any thing made that was made”. This is not merely a repeat of what the verse
part of the verse is saying, it says something more. Is says that, not only is Jesus the Creator
of all things, but that nothing has ever been created except what was created
by ‘the Word’ who they and we believe refers to Jesus. So what John 1:1 and 3 is teaching is that
Jesus is not created but that has eternally existed with God, because He is God,
equal to the Father. John 1:3 is clear
that if anything was ever made, it was made by Jesus and He cannot therefore be
part of the created order. He is the
Creator and not created, He is God.
Again this open the door to share the
gospel by focusing their attention on Jesus the Eternal Son of God who became
man and died for the sins of all who believe in him.
Jehovah’s Witnesses are not easily
convinced and because they believe that all true Bible believing Christians are
apostate, they will not easily be convinced that what you believe is true. It is however possible, sometimes with
persistence, to sow doubt about some of their own beliefs and to show them from
Scriptures why they are wrong. After
they doubt their own ‘truth’ they might well be more accepting of the real
truth. All this must be prayerfully
brought to God. Promise them that you
will pray for them and then continue to pray for them to see the light of the
gospel of Jesus Christ, the eternal God who became man.
Amen
